Robert Street, BRIGHTON, BN1 4AH

A residential street that runs between North Road and Gloucester Road that was developed in the late 1830s. The terrace on the right is broken by the three storied building which was originally a Jireh Chapel that closed in 1902 and was converted into a business premises but are now flats. On the left are the Argus Lofts, a series of apartments that inhabit the shell of the former Evening Argus print works that moved out to Hollingbury in 2000. The print works were built in the early 1900s and originally occupied the middle section of the street but eventually expanded northwards up Gloucester Road.

Small side street linking North Road to Gloucester Road. To the left are the old buildings of the Southern Publishing Company who moved into the street in 1926 and eventually became the main printing presses for the local rag, the Evening Argus. The premises eventually expanded to include near enough all of the western side of the street. The paper moved out to new larger offices on Hollingbury Industrial Estate around the year 2000 and the building became derelict and partially gutted by a fire in 2002. After that the southern end was turned into offices with shops facing out onto North Road whilst the older facade now houses the Argus Lofts, a new set of residential flats. The large building on the right in the distance is a former furniture repository which has also been converted into flats.

The gallery stands on the corner of Robert Street, and North Road. Gallery 94 displays, and sells, the work of local artist Simon Royer. Half an hour later, with the sun having moved around slightly further, the arty birds on the wall might have been shown off to better effect .... but joints were hurting after walking several miles, and I had a train to catch!

In the North Laine area of Brighton

Small side street running between North Road and Gloucester Road and running parallel with Kensington Gardens. Many of the houses that once lined the western side of the street have gone with only a few remaining, the gaps used as car parking or access for the shops in Kensington Gardens. The street has been brightened by the inclusion of graffiti art produced by delarge in conjunction with Brighton council. The eastern side once housed the printing presses of the local paper, The Evening Argus (now just plain Argus), that remained here until the 1990s when it moved to an industrial estate on the outskirts of the city, the former buildings have been turned into apartments and shops, the window belonging to Wagamamas restaurant.
