Numbers 88-93 were built as residences in the mid 19th century and were originally known as Sillwood Terrace. Most of the ground floors were converted into shops during the early 1870s. Number 88 began life as piano seller, later became a gown retailer, then acquired by Chipperfield & Butler who moved here from the other stores at
Image and
Image, was a lingerie store through much of the 1980s and since 2012 has been a tanning salon.
Number 89 was originally a grocers, then a costumiers followed by a series of television retailers. The 1980s saw a steady turnover prior to the current occupants, gift shop Evolution, arrived in 1991. Number 90 has seen a greater turnover than some of the other stores beginning life as a fancy bazaar, then twenty years as a chemist, it was briefly a bank, a ladies tailor, a music retailer and a furrier. During the 1950s it became a restaurant run by Fortes for thirty years and at the end of the 1980s was the first Pizza Express in the town. From 2000 it became another music retailer until that closed in 2015 becoming a discount store in the early part of 2016.
For 114 years number 91 was a shoe shop spread between two companies. After a brief period as a charity shop it has been home to Mail Boxes, who provide office services, since the late 1990s. Number 92 started as a milliner and was then replaced by a store dealing in Indian rubber goods that traded for sixty years. After the Second World War it became a TV dealer for 28 years and a furniture store for another 30. Since 2009 it has been a convenience store. Finally, number 93 has also seen a large turnover of businesses since 1873 broken only by 45 years as a ladies tailor, 24 as a children’s outfitter, and 22 as a travel agent. Since 2001 it has been a charity shop.
