War Memorial, Regency Square
Directly opposite the old entrance to the West Pier is Regency Square. The war memorial was unveiled in 1904 and was dedicated to the volunteers of the Royal Sussex Regiment who fell during the Boer War. There are further dedications to fallen members in the Seven Years War, particularly Louisberg and Quebec, and the Egyptian Campaign of 1884. Prior to the square being laid out this plot of land was known as Belle Vue Field and the main area for military drills. From 1793 this in turn became a vast military camp for soldiers waiting to be sent overseas. Regency Square was begun in 1817 as a response to Bedford Square and was laid out by Joshua Fletcher Hanson and built by the father and son architects Amon Wilds and Amon Henry Wilds. The square was completed in 1828. Click on the link to take you to the next page. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/211516
