Built between 1818-28 on the site of Belle Vue Field that had previously been used for fairs, markets and military camps. The steps in the foreground lead to an underground car park built in 1969 which was originally to have been placed on the surface, the resulting outcry from residents sent it underground.

Regency Square
The oft photographed northern terrace of the square built between 1818-28 on what was Belle Vue Field, which served as the site of a large military camp during the Napoleonic Wars. The square itself is now the roof of an underground car park originally planned to be built on the surface until a huge outcry sent it below.

29 Regency Square, Brighton
From about 1876 to 1884 this was a lodging house run by Thomas Sapp, an ancestor of the photographer. Lodgers included a member of the London Stock Exchange and a merchant, so it was a posh lodging house. It is still a hotel. It was built in 1818-1828, and is a listed building.
