Creation Nightclub, West Street
West Street is on the eastern side of the Kingswest Centre and marks the boundary of the ancient settlement of Brighton. Originally built up from the 13th century onwards the street has seen a large number of changes over the centuries. The oldest structure left in the street is the post on the pavement. It is a grade II listed structure and is the last remaining tethering post of Thrale House which once stood on the site of Creation. The Thrales were celebrities of the time and often had guests of the calibre of Samuel Johnson and Fanny Burney come down to visit them. Post First World War, this site has been a dance hall or night club in one form or other, until the 1970s it was the site of Sherry's dance hall which gets a mention in Greene's novel Brighton Rock. The older building was demolished in the late 70s and has been a succession of nightclubs ever since, the Pink Cocnut, Paradox and currently Creation. West Street itself is littered with nightclubs and bars and can be an unpleasant place to be on Friday and Saturday nights.
