Dolphin Lodge and Marine Point
Large apartment block on the corner of Grand Avenue and West Parade. Dolphin Lodge (in the background) was originally designed as a 370 bedroom hotel, to be named the Hotel Metropole, and approved in 1893, in anticipation of increasing visitors to West Worthing, given the proximity of West Worthing Station at the top of Grand Avenue. Although building of the hotel started, by the late 1890s financial difficulties at the construction firm led to work stopping and it remained as a part completed shell for many years. It was eventually completed in 1923 as an apartment block, briefly named Grand Avenue Mansion before being renamed The Towers the following year. It was later renamed as Dolphin Lodge in the 1970s. The original plans included a southern wing along West Parade, which never materialised - instead the block facing onto West Parade, Marine Point, towards the right of the photo, was added in 1962, designed by local architects Kenneth Parker and Associates.

Derelict building - West Parade, Worthing
This building is something of an eyesore and has been derelict for some time. As is usual when a building lies abandoned in an otherwise prosperous area, there is a story of planning wrangles leading to an impasse. In this case a redevelopment proposal for an 11-storey apartment block was turned down by the planning authority and the developers are working on alternative designs that local residents will hopefully accept as more sympathetic to the area.
