East Lancashire Railway Loco Sheds, Buckley Wells
East Lancashire Railway's preserved English Electric Type 4 Class 40 diesel locomotive ‘345’ stands outside the loco shed at Buckley Wells. The locomotive was built in 1961 at the Vulcan Foundry for British Rail’s Eastern Region where it remained allocated throughout its working life. It was renumbered 40145 under the TOPS system in January 1974. 40145 was withdrawn from service in 1983 following damage sustained in a derailment. It was secured for preservation and arrived at Bury in 1984. The locomotive is now restored to BR blue livery and its number of 345 http://www.elrdiesel.info/fleet-40145.php ELR Diesel Group Fleet Information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_40 British Rail Class 40 (Wikipedia)

Preserved Locomotive Outside East Lancashire Railway Workshops at Buckley Wells
Preserved Class 33 diesel locomotive 'Captain Bill Smith RNR' (33109) stands outside the sheds at Buckley Wells. Built at Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company in 1960 for British Rail’s Southern Region, 33109 is one of two preserved class 33 locomotives operating on the East Lancashire Railway. Originally carrying the fleet number D6525, it was renumbered 33109 in 1974 to conform to the computerised TOPS systems. Officially withdrawn in February 1997 and sold for preservation, 33109 moved first to the Mid Hants Railway. Following a spell of storage at Crewe, the loco was sold to ELR Diesel Group for a second spell of preservation at the East Lancashire Railway, moving to Bury in 2007 and returning to service in February 2008. The locomotive is named 'Captain Bill Smith RNR'; a photo of the plaque explaining his story can be seen in the gallery at http://www.elrdiesel.info/fleet-33109.php . It is currently running in BR Blue with white window surrounds. http://www.elrdiesel.info/documents/fleet-profile-33109.pdf ELR fleet profile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_33 British Rail Class 33 (Wikipedia)

Pacer DMU at Buckley Wells (East Lancashire Railway)
Ex-Northern Rail 144009 was one of 23 class 144 Pacer Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) built for British Rail between 1986 and 1987; all were withdrawn by May 2020 as they did not meet new disability regulations (https://www.railwaymagazine.co.uk/1984/northern-pacer-withdrawals-scheduled-to-begin-in-2018/ The Railway Magazine 19 April 2017). 144009 was acquired by Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service (GMFRS) and moved to the East Lancashire Railway by road in September 2020 for temporary storage at the Buckley Wells yard awaiting its final movement to the GMFRS Bury Training and Safety Centre nearby (Image]). 144009 is currently fully operational and the fire service agreed for it to operate a few services at the East Lancashire Railway’s 2020 railcar gala. This event was cancelled due to Covid-19 so the runs did not take place but the set did appear in passenger service during the ELR Diesel Gala event in summer 2021. Recently repainted in the fictitious livery of “Great Midlands Trains” for a filming contract, it is expected that 144009 will be used by GMFRS as a training aid for staff and so operation as a train again will be extremely unlikely once it has been transferred to the fire service.
