Site of the "Sol Viva"/Odeon Cinema
Nothing remains now of what was one of Bury’s most iconic buildings which used to stand on the site behind the hoardings. In October 2013, bulldozers arrived on the site and the demolition of the former Odeon Cinema, a landmark building regarded by many as Bury’s most iconic buildings, began to make way for a new development. The building, which was at the end of the old Rock and faced the new Rock shopping and leisure complex, was an Odeon Cinema from 1936 to 1981 and then became The Arena roller skating rink. After undertaking another facelift it was relaunched as a 1,500-capacity Roxy nightclub, later renamed Sol Viva. It was a well-known entertainment venue for thousands of people over the years and prospered as recently as 2007 when it was refurbished but the club suffered badly in the economic recession and closed in 2010. The building was bought by Thornfield Properties, the firm of developers which spearheaded The Rock development opposite. In November 2012, Thornfield obtained Bury Council’s permission to demolish the building and build four restaurant-cafe units in its place, as well as a covered walkway. http://goo.gl/bBOz8F Bury Times 11 October 2013 The “Sol” was certainly one of the most distinctive buildings in the town, see Robert Wade’s photo Image] taken in 2010.
