Bobby Peel's statue
This statue of Sir Robert Peel former MP for Bury stands in Market Place, colloquially known in the Lancashire dialect as "at top 't street," close to Bury parish church. He is popularly remembered for the creation of the police force, constables of which were commonly known as "Peelers," but his most significant contribution to society was in the repealing of the corn laws when he was Prime Minister. When the statue was first unveiled to the public it was noted that waistcoat buttons were on the wrong side of the garment and the sculptor is reputed to have committed suicide on being advised of his error.
