Rainbow Tribute to the NHS Outside Bury Town Hall
A number of rainbows started to appear across the country during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_the_United_Kingdom . The rainbows were usually painted by children and placed in windows but also, sometimes chalked on pavements or other more elaborate decorations on the outside of houses https://www.hellomagazine.com/homes/gallery/2020033187217/coronavirus-rainbow-displays-windows-photos/9/ This trend appears to have started in Italy but has also been adopted in the US, Canada and Spain, where people have adorned their windows and balconies with colourful pictures. Bury MBC prepared a rainbow-themed display at the Manchester Road side of the town hall outside Bury Register Office as a tribute to the borough’s NHS and key workers such as social carers. The multi-coloured displays include giant NHS letters, golden keys and flower beds, while the nearby benches and metal hanging basket trees have also been given the rainbow treatment. The flower displays include a heart-shaped bed of red begonias, with various coloured begonias around the perimeter and a mixture of perennials planted in the stone works, along with some cana lilies at the back. When these all come into bloom they will enhance the display further. Rainbows are used as a symbol of peace and hope as they often appear when the sun follows a heavy rainfall. They serve to remind us that there is hope and light to follow even after dark times. Children and parents were encouraged to share photos of their rainbows on social media using the tags #RainbowTrail and #ChaseTheRainbow. The wicker bride and groom normally at that location (Image]) are being kept in storage as weddings are not currently being held at the office due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

Bury Town Hall
Bury's Town Hall, on Knowsley Street was officially opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II on the 22nd October 1954, some 15 years after the foundation stone was laid by the Earl of Derby in 1939. The design of the building was the result of an architectural competition. Work commenced on site in 1938 and, despite the war, continued until 1940, by which time only the outer shell had been completed. It remained in this incomplete state with only the basement being in use (as an air raid shelter), until work was able to re-commence post-war, in 1947. The building is now the home of the Borough Council and also accommodates the Elizabethan Suite which hosts both official and social functions. http://www.bury.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=2145&p=0 Bury Town Centre Heritage Trail
