Birtenshaw School
The special school was founded in 1956 and until recently was housed in nearby Birtenshaw Hall. The Hall was previously one of the homes of the Ashworth family, cotton barons. Some say that the architecture and colours of the new school building sit uneasily in the surrounding landscape.

Gatepost on Darwen Road
A single redundant gatepost which bears on its south west face an OS benchmark, and above that a further mark in the shape of a + sign. That sign may indicate that the benchmark was no longer considered to be accurate.

Redundant gate posts
These appear to have been left on what looks like a village green, as a feature.

Birtenshaw farmhouse
The house is boarded up and unoccupied. Whether it is scheduled for demolition or renovation I do not know. The house bears a datestone reading GBA 1891. This is probably George Binns Ashworth (1823-1905) who owned the adjacent Birtenshaw Hall and the farm's land.

Remains of a wall at Birtenshaw Hall
The Hall is now demolished but this wall, which abuts a public footpath, remains. The wall has several openings onto the footpath which have been bricked, or stoned up. At least one of these openings has iron brackets attached suggesting a door of some kind opening onto the path. I do not know the purpose of these openings or the building whose wall this was but possibly it was some sort of agricultural structure. The lintel of one of the openings has the initials I.A. on it. Possibly this is Isabel Ashworth, 1799-1827, who lived in the hall.
