Pedestrianised for many years. The statue is of Fred Dibnah, erstwhile steeplejack of this town, and the glass structure behind houses a restored cotton mill engine.

Looking towards the corner of Oxford Street and Deansgate, in Bolton. Ahead is the Corliss Engine which was made in Bolton in 1866, and was used in a silk spinning mill in Bentham, Yorkshire until 1969. The stationary steam engine was put in its case by Bolton Corporation in 1973 when the Newport Street and Oxford Street pedestrianised area was opened.

Fred Dibnah Statue
Fred Dibnah MBE was a Bolton-born steeplejack and eccentric whose love of mechanical engineering made him a cult TV personality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Dibnah Wikipedia article). This 8 foot high bronze statue was unveiled in April 2008. It stands at the corner of Oxford Street and Deansgate, in front of the Corliss Engine which was put in its case by Bolton Corporation in 1973 when the Newport Street and Oxford Street pedestrianised area was opened (Image The plaque on the statue reads: Fred Dibnah was a Bolton lad and proud of it. He spent his life working on many of the town’s landmarks and shared his love of steam engines with millions of television viewers. After his death in November 2004, it was decided to launch a fund to pay for a lasting tribute to recognise his achievements. Thousands of people, locally and nationally, made donations. Thank you to all those individuals, organisations, companies and steam enthusiasts who helped to pay for this statue to “OUR FRED” (For the full text, see Image])

Dr Fred Dibnah
Arguably, Bolton's most famous son, this straight-talking Lancastrian steeplejack is commemorated with this statue in Oxford Street; behind him is a Corliss Steam Engine. His exploits as a steeplejack, which included demolishing many of Lancashire's mill chimneys, and his love of steam engines provided the material for his later career as a television personality. He died in 2004.

The Old Three Crowns, Bolton centre
Recently refurbished/ gutted depending on your taste. Externally, desperately needs to acquire and then adjust the shop front on the left and then the 'whole' would be quite imposing.
