Rail replacement bus at Bolton
Bolton station was closed for maintenance work. Passengers for Manchester and Wigan were using buses instead.
Bolton railway station is located on the Manchester spur of the West Coast Main Line and is managed by Northern Rail. The station was originally named Bolton Trinity Street to differentiate it from nearby Bolton Great Moor Street station which closed in 1954.
Trinity Street station opened when the Manchester and Bolton Railway completed its route to Salford Central in 1838. The line extended to Manchester Victoria in 1843. Trains to Manchester Piccadilly and beyond began running in May 1988 with the opening of the Windsor Link.

Bolton Trinity St. station: Up express and Down freight
View southward, towards Manchester: ex-L&Y Manchester - Preston, Blackburn etc. main lines. The 10.15 Fleetwood/Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria stands at the Up main platform, headed by (unrebuilt) 'Patriot' class 6P5F 4-6-0 No. 45509 'Derbyshire Yeomanry' (built 8/32, named 1951, withdrawn 6/62), while on the Down Through line a Class J empties passes, headed by ex-WD 2-8-0 No. 90204. This engine was built by NE Loco as No. 7239 (later 77239) in 10/43 and loaned to the LNER at York and to the SR: it was shipped to France in 1/45, worked in Belgium and returned to England in 1947. It was stored on the GWR at Kingham and eventually put to work on the LMR (as 90204) in 1/50, staying on at various depots on the LMR - apart from an interlude at Colwick - until withdrawn in 6/65.
