Site for new Aldi Supermarket in Ramsbottom
This is the site for the new £5M Aldi supermarket due to be built on Railway Street in Ramsbottom during 2009. The white building on the left used to be offices of the distribution company TNT with the staff car park located on the right. Controversial plans to build a third supermarket in Ramsbottom were originally rejected by Bury Council on ‘design’ issues in August 2008. Aldi appealed against that decision and won in December 2008 with construction due to begin in March 2009.http://www.burytimes.co.uk/news/ramsbottomtottington/4007643.Aldi_to_open_new_store/ The plans to develop a third supermarket, joining Tesco and the Co-op, have infuriated somee local traders. Janet Hodgson, who has runs The Flower Gallery in Bridge Street said in the local press: “I have nothing against the company but I feel very strongly that an Aldi store is the last thing Ramsbottom needs. I’ve yet to meet a person in Ramsbottom who thinks it’s a good idea". Judith Morris of Turley Associates, acting for Aldi, also said in the local press "there had been a lot of consultation work and the store will have no direct impact on town centre trade". More photographs will be added from this location as construction progresses during 2009
