Coastguard mud rescue exercise in Holes Bay
Members of the Poole and Southbourne Coastguard Rescue Teams practising mud rescue techniques in Holes Bay, the northern end of Poole Harbour. Pergin's Island is in the background. At this point in the exercise, the 'casualty' and rescuer are being winched ashore using a mud sled.
A variety of techniques and equipment is used by mud rescue teams, including sleds, mud shoes, body-boards and fire-extinguishers fitted with mud lances which are used to loosen mud around trapped victims.
