Chapel Street is a long street which runs parallel to the railway, and crosses Barkerhouse Road at about its mid-point, from where this photograph is taken, looking north-eastwards. The houses are numbers 94 and upwards, evens (to 144 at the far end).

Looking south-west. The shop is No 25 and the other houses, 23 to 1 (odds). In the far distance is seen Pendle Hill, home of the famous witches, which gave its name to the new Borough in 1974.

Walverden Water, Nelson, Lancashire
This small stream rises in the hills a few miles east of Nelson, and after feeding a reservoir, it runs through the centre of the town, where it is known disparagingly as " 't Goit". Eventually most of its contents find their way into Pendle Water and finally the Irish Sea.

The 'Prince of Wales', Leeds Road, Nelson, Lancashire
Pubs have a hard time existing in places such as Nelson, where up to 50% of the population do not touch alcohol, so extra congratulation is due to those survivors that retain their traditional appeal.
