The Cross Gaits, Blacko
The grade II listed pub (list entry 1273141) dates probably from the 18th century, and was highly commended by another contributor Image but alas it was closed on a Monday. Not long after my visit I saw a media report that the pub was to be closed and put up for sale in 2023.

The Cross Gaits, Blacko - detail
See Image for context. The stone tablet is dated 1736 and bears the odd inscription 'good ale to morrow for nothing', which could perhaps mean that beer once poured will go off by the next day, or that the pleasures of a night out are forgotten with the morning's hangover.

An ideal pub where you will get excellent draught beer in tip-top condition, good appetising food if you require it, and almost certainly some real conversation. Deservedly popular with walkers, cyclists and locals.

This ancient pub has a mixed clientele of locals, walkers and cyclists. The food is excellent value and the real hand-pumped beer superb - the 'guv'nor' is an enthusiast who would be ashamed to offer you anything less.

Blacko, Lancashire: The 'Cross Gaits'
See also Image Just one little porkie - the blue sign describes it as being 'In the heart of Lancashire'. Well - it isn't - it's on the extreme edge of Lancashire. But as the adjoining County is Yorkshire, that's not a problem.
