Colne: Corporation electricity works
In the days when local authorities were allowed to do more than rubber-stamp decisions made for them in Whitehall, many municipalities generated their own electricity, often by purchasing a plant which had been set up under private initiative. Here we are looking north from Greenfield Bridge, and see the former Colne electricity works on the west side of Phillips Lane.

Colne: Phillips Lane
Looking north down Phillips Lane from its junction with Burnley Road, Greenfield Bridge (over Colne Water) is seen at the bottom of the hill. Beyond there, on the left, are the old electricity works, and Phillips Lane then rises to meet Greenfield Road at the far end.

Colne: Greenfield House
Greenfield House is shown on old Ordnance Survey maps dating from the middle of the nineteenth century, but I do not know its actual date of building. It would appear that this large house is now divided into three separate dwellings.

Colne: Greenfield House Farm
This splendid house is incorrectly labelled as 'Greenfield House' on the official Lancashire County large-scale map, but is correctly named as above. It was built around 1580 by the Towneleys of Royle.
