Ilex Mill and the River Irwell, Rawtenstall
Adaptively reused textile mill. The nearest block looks new and has balconies - aaargh! The further sections are original and quite nicely done. The chimney is a gorgeous survivor and would have been a sad loss. Keeping these potent symbols is not a light undertaking as they need lifelong care and bits falling off can have major consequences. The mill was built in 1856 and is Grade II Listed.

River Irwell at Bocholt Way
Bocholt Way to the right is named after Rossendale's twin town. The road runs along the trackbed of the disused line to Bacup. Ilex Mill in the distance is now converted to apartments.
