Former mill, Darwen
This is presumed to be a reused small textile mill of some description with a square stone chimney. Across the road is the monumental India Mill chimney. I would welcome any further information about this small works.

Steam engine near India Mill, Darwen
J & E Wood of Bolton horizontal cross compound mill engine. Corliss valves and rope drive. Preserved in the open and surviving surprisingly well when photographed. I had been led to believe this is the engine that James Mason stops in the opening sequence of the film Spring and Port Wine. However, looking at an online clip shows that the cylinders are the opposite way round with the high pressure on the left. Colin Bowden has pointed out that the engine in the film was in fact at Joseph Johnson's Deane Shed in Bolton. That engine (Deane Shed) was built in 1907 and George Watkins gives the cylinders as 17" & 32" x 48". It developed 450 horsepower at 78 rpm on steam at 150 psi. It is claimed to have stopped in 1965 so must have been recommissioned for the film.
