The missing metal insert would probably have displayed a coat of arms and BURNLEY MUNICIPAL BOROUGH BOUNDARY / 1889. Gawthorpe turning circle, Whitegate
Gawthorpe turning circle is located just inside Burnley's historical town boundary on the main road to Padiham, and thus presumably once marked the limit of municipal bus operation in this direction. However, all buses on this route now continue at least as far as Padiham, rendering the turning circle redundant.
