Lodge House, Burnley
This fine stone building with an integral engine house and a chimney with an oversailing cap is the former Newtown Mill that was built in 1864. It is now converted to office accommodation.

River Calder, Burnley
This is a confusing corner. The building in the background carries the title Newtown Mill but is actually Newtown Steel Works that was part of the Burnley Iron Works site. Newtown Mill is the closer building with tall round-headed windows on the left and the fine chimney is its. Newtown Mill, now labelled Lodge House, was built in 1864. It is now used as offices. The book Burnley Cotton Mills by Jack Nadin (2008) is a valuable resource for sorting out these sites.

Cow Lane
This old derelict building on Cow Lane which runs south from St James St is the old Empire Theatre or Empire Music Hall. It was built in 1894 and it has seen service as a theatre, then after 1938 as a cinema and then after 1970 as a bingo hall. It ceased operation in 1996 and is currently owned by the UK government(HM Treasury) Extra information from the TheatresTrust.org : The auditorium is elaborately detailed with robust and richly formed plasterwork in the Classical style. As reconstructed by Crewe in 1911, it has two slightly curved wide and deep balconies, terminating in superimposed stage boxes framed between massive Corinthian columns supporting a deep cornice. Segmental-arched proscenium, with richly decorated spandrels and heraldic cartouche. Side walls feature plaster panels, pilasters and drops. Flat, panelled ceiling with circular centre panel and central sun burner. Restrained heraldic and Greek plasterwork on balcony and box fronts. Three boxes and the upper balcony have been partitioned off. If the theatre was to be restored to use, the narrow stage would need to be extended and front of house would need improvement. The council has undertaken some works to the building to ensure public safety but does not have the resources to restore the theatre. The full extent of the condition of the building is not known however there are concerns that sections of the building could suffer structural failure and potential loss of historic fabric as a result of neglect and decay. Water ingress appears to be accelerating the decay of the structure. Externally the building appears to be failing, particularly the roof which is not water tight and this will undoubtedly have impacted on the condition of the interior. See Image An earlier photo Image taken in 2009 shows that the building has deteriorated further during the past six years.
