The ancient cross of Croscombe
The cross has quite a history! It dates from the fourteenth century and used to stand a little further into the road, where it was not much of a problem for centuries. However, by the busier times of the nineteenth, horse-drawn vehicles were only able to pass in singles. Way-Wardens were appointed to regulate the passage and they took it upon themselves to knock the cross down one day. The villagers were horrified that their cross was demolished without notice and set up a round-the-clock guard to prevent the Way-Wardens coming back. It was rebuilt but not in the same place - it's now close to the pub!

Slaking the spiritual thirst
A common legend on some water supplies, this source has a tap still in place. Croscombe appears to have several such historic public access taps on Long Street, all of which have some uplifting inscriptions.

A shorted distance to stagger
The old Croscombe cross used to stand in the middle of the road but has since been repositioned a little closer to the pavement. It appears to have been a handy bit of furniture for many generations of revellers but is now closer to the pub than ever. The worn stones bear their own testimony.

A rusty old boiler out in the open
Croscombe's industrial heritage went from wool to silk production and mining, and also included corn milling. This old bit of more modern technology is now exposed for public view as a reminder of the past.

The Cross, Croscombe
The village pub with the cross in front of it, appropriately enough. However, the pub was originally known as the Rose and Crown and its first license was granted in 1516. The name later became the Bull Terrier for a while until 1976, before having a large amount of work done in recent years.
