The high wall of HMP Shepton Mallet
The forbidding stone wall of HMP Shepton Mallett, one of the oldest prisons. In the war, it was handed over to the US forces and executions of black soldiers took place there, who had been found guilty of desertion. It is said that bullet holes can still be found in the walls inside the prison.

Looking within at those without
H.M.P. Shepton Mallet, also known as Cornhill, once provided a treadmill that held forty inmates. The power created by them was used to run a flour mill until 1890. See Image] for another view.

The unapologetic exterior of Britain's oldest working prison, now holding category 'C' lifers. Apart from a brief closure in the 1930s this house of detention has held many inmates in its time, seen many escape attempts and held executions (several of which were military).
