Church of St Peter & St Paul, Shepton Mallet - brass to Joan Strode
A large brass plate dated 1649 is now in a wooden frame hanging on a wall under the tower. It is dedicated to Joan Strode, the wife of William Strode, and depicts the whole family kneeling in a perspective interior. William is on the left, his wife Joan on the right facing each other, with between them, the grim figure of Death in skeletal form aiming a spear at Joan. Closer examination reveals their kneeling children, six sons, and three daughters (left and right respectively), all of whom are captioned with their names.
