"Under the wide and starry sky..."
Oakhill war memorial stands at the junction of High Street and the main A367. It marks the men who fought in the two world wars and was created by Wiltshire masons Osbourne and Sons. The rear face features a poem, whose opening lines are as the title. See Image] for a fuller reading.

A poem to the fallen
Oakhill war memorial features this poem:
"Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig me a grave and let me lie,
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I lay me down with a will."
It is the first verse of Robert Louis Stevenson's Requiem. The second would read:
"This be the verse you grave for me,
Here he lies where he longed to be,
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill."

Oakhill Methodist church
The Wesleyan Methodist church stands near the main road, dating from 1825. John Wesley himself used to preach to the villagers from 1746 and found a strong community that was already non-conformist many years previously. On other visits Wesley found the population in feisty moods, sometimes fuelled by a drunken mob who were prompted by unseen agitators. Oakhill was also a Presbyterian hotbed, led by the Billingsleys - a well known dissenting family who settled at nearby Ashwick about 1689.

Oakhill Church School and Nursery
Oakhill school has been at the heart of the village for over a century. Pupils are sorted into four houses: Fernhill, Challenger, Brownes and Springfield - all named after local caves!
