The old depository
This elegant building is clearly one with a different past. The firm of Fortt, Hatt and Billings were prominent house valuers, auctioneers, removals and contractors.

Sounds like a new use
This branch of Richer Sounds is in what was formerly the Porter Butt, a popular watering hole on the London Road but which eventually fell to the downturn in the trade. Originally the Walcot Palais, it opened in 1787. Interestingly, the new firm arrived in 2010 and have kept some of the old pub features, like the Lounge window and the cockerel - see Image

Towards Walcot from Morrisons car park
The nearest houses are on London Road, the A4. Above on the slopes of the steep Beacon Hill rise the streets of Walcot.

Shop Fronts on the London Rd
This part of the London Rd used to be part of the Roman Fosse way and has always been the main route eastwards out of the city. For many years it has also bee the A4. Of the five shops in the image three are vacant and the others have become a hairdressers call The Hair Studio and Beauty Room.
