The walls came tumbling down
This part of Silver Street used to be home to the old Town Hall and the Court Leet. It had a colonnade (which held traders' stalls) and also housed some stocks, pillories and a whipping post for those found guilty of misdemeanours. But the area is still known as the Old Market, alongside The Shambles - appropriately enough, the sadly neglected hall collapsed in 1826.

A new scene
Some of the old mills area by the Avon have been cleared and this modern vista has allowed a few commercial enterprises to establish themselves. Naturally, the twenty-first century is founded on the food and drink sectors primarily, as opposed to rubber and woollen goods of the past.
