Working on The Vaults at Bath Spa Station
The Vaults is the final component of the SouthGate development http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SouthGate,_Bath . Several restaurants and kiosks will be clustered around a new pedestrian plaza between the bus and railway stations. One of the restaurants is seen nearing completion above the vaults to the left. These arches have been exposed by digging away a substantial ramp, which provided an access road to the elevated level of the station platform. It was the only way up for passengers unable to use the stairs, before lifts were installed in 2011 as part of the station redevelopment. The ramp was an integral part of Brunel's design for the station (opened 1840 on the Great Western Railway). Originally there was a goods shed on top of the arches (old drawing here http://www.freshford.com/pages16.htm ), it was demolished at the end of the 19th century.
