Bath : Guildhall
The current Bath stone building, which was designed by Thomas Baldwin, was built between 1775 and 1778. It was extended by John McKean Brydon in 1893. The central facade has four Ionic columns and the building is surmounted by the figure of Justice.

Guildhall, High Street, Bath (1)
A most distinguished Georgian building, its "High Street elevation the best in Bath", with uncommonly good Victorian additions. The Georgian centrepiece (Image]), designed by Thomas Baldwin and built in 1775-78, is refined Adamesque, whereas John McKean Brydon's extensive additions of 1893-96 strike a bolder tone, particularly the Vanbrughian rooftop pavilions (Image]). Grade I listed. Standing in the foreground is the Rebekah Fountain erected in 1861. Grade II listed.

Guildhall, High Street, Bath (2)
Thomas Baldwin's centrepiece is superb, excellently proportioned and graced by refined Adamesque details, such as the festoons, beautifully disposed. The main feature is the attached Ionic portico surmounted by a pediment containing the city arms (Image]). Grade I listed. Wider view: Image

Up the High Street
Taking advantage of the view afforded from Bath Abbey tower, the city streets are laid out to admire. The larger steeple is St Michael's, and just on the horizon almost in line is St Stephen's.

Outside there is a hire stand for bicycles; the archway leads to car parking. Presumably it once led to stabling.
