Whateley Lane
Shafts of sunlight streak through the morning mist along Whateley Lane. This lane links Hockley with the hamlet of Whateley, at first it is named Hockley Road, but after a couple of hundred yards (and a bend) it changes its name. This lane has quite steep sloping banks and there used to be a number of large trees with huge root systems that leaned worryingly across the lane in a rather magical way. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) these trees have been chopped down - but their fantastical roots still remain in places - see Image] & Image]

How are the mighty fallen !
Or in this case chopped. The stump of a once mighty tree that clung tenaciously to the banks of Whateley Lane for well over a hundred years I'd think. No doubt someone thought that a massive tree leaning across a public road at an angle of 45° could be a bit dangerous. A similar fate has befallen other trees along this lane - a pity as they were rather magical. The lane is still very attractive though and the Image] remain in many places.

Convoluted roots
The gnarled and twisted roots of a once mighty tree, now sadly reduced to a stump (see Image])

This is my field !
A rather nice looking cow (or it might be a bullock !) looks over the fence which borders Whateley Lane near to its junction with Rushy* Lane. *Note: Although the maps & signs now call this lane "Rush Lane" the real name has the y on the end, it was accidentally removed by a cartographical oversight many years ago.
