The Rousler Public House, Bromsgrove
This fairly new public house was opened on what was the site of Halfords, the car and cycle accessory shop. It was named by my wife who was a joint winneer in a competition run by the local paper in conjunction with the pub group.

The Rousler (1), 11-13 High Street, Bromsgrove
This is one of that fairly rare breed, a relatively new pub. It is part of the Smith & Jones chain, and opened in June 2006. Prior to that, the building had been used as a branch of Halfords, the motor accessories retailer. At one time it seems this was two buildings. They date from 1871, and were designed by John Cotton. Unfortunately the pub seemed to attract some young people at weekends, whose main objective was, it is claimed, to look for a fight. As a result in 2010 the pub was given a makeover. The TV's, with their emphasis on sport, were taken out and the pub was renamed The Grapevine. It re-opened under this name on the 18th August 2010. This photograph was taken about two months earlier, when it was still The Rousler. Image

The Rousler (2), 11-13 High Street, Bromsgrove
To rousle is an old Worcestershire word, meaning to wake up. The figure on the sign seems to be based on a medieval church grotesque. Certainly if you were half asleep and imagined you saw one of these, you would pretty soon be wide awake. Unfortunately the sign has now gone, after a brief four years. In August 2010 the pub was renamed The Grapevine, and a new sign appeared. However there is still a Bromsgrove Rousler. It is the name of the annual magazine published by the Bromsgrove Society.
