A handsome group by James & Lister Lea, 1896-97, as usual in brick and terracotta. Superficially uniform - shaped gables abound - but featuring a mixture of designs.

Midland Bank Bristol Street. Sorting code 40-11-39
I worked for Midland Bank HSBC for 32 years and spent all but the last two in Birmingham Branches. I am photographing all the branches, or what's left of them, as they were when I joined Midland Bank in 1963. The branches all start with the sorting code 40-11.
This was the 96 Bristol Street branch on the main A38 road. The sorting code was 40-11-39.

Wellington Hotel, Bristol Street, Birmingham
Fine pub with a multi-phase history. The left-hand section was built as a house c1792. It was enlarged and stuccoed by James & Lister Lea in 1890-91, and the ground floor was remodelled by J.P. Osborne & Son in 1930. Grade II listed.
The pub later closed, but happily has re-opened.
