The Victoria (1), 48 John Bright Street
Tucked away on the corner where Station Street becomes John Bright Street, is this Victorian gem, a Victorian theatre pub, next to the Alexandra Theatre. It attracts a wide variety of customers, including actors, staff and patrons of the theatre. As well as a wide variety of food, it offers an amazing range of entertainment through the week. There are and were several other pubs in Birmingham with Victoria in their name. It was a very popular name for pubs in the Victorian era. Image Image Image

Amazing decoration on this Victorian theatre pub, which is still going strong. I'm not sure whether there is still a door in use behind the metalwork, but this certainly looks very attractive. John Bright Street was named after the well-known radical, who was elected as a Member of Parliament for Birmingham in 1858. He held this seat for over thirty years. He was a leading proponent for parliamentary reform, to make the representation more democratic, which led to the Reform Act of 1867. For more information and photos, please see:- Image

Birmingham, Victoria
Good Beer Guide pub on John Bright Street, in theatreland. Circular counter, with two semi-circular bars around it; quirky decor, background music, some Victorian features and Art Deco windows. Cask ales on offer at my visit: Firebrand Black Stuff, Sadler's Mellow Yellow, Wainwright's, Wychwood Dirty Tackle.

Lush pub by Thomas Plevins, 1883, the ground floor probably by Watson & Johnson, 1908. Good ironwork, e.g. Image
