Charles House, between Newhall Street and Margaret Street - CML stands for Colonial Mutual Life Assurance and the nine-storey building dates from 1939, the architects being Hennessy, Hennessy & Co. of Sydney.

The premises (which actually comprise two buildings) date from 1900-1. Its architecture is described in the Pevsner Architectural Guide to Birmingham as "Flemish and Jacobean Renaissance, fused with elements of Arts and Crafts Free Style".
