Lionel Street and the Post Office Tower, Birmingham
This view across Birmingham is seen by looking north-east from "The Secret Garden" on Level 7 of the new library. Lionel Street leads straight towards the Post Office Tower. The BT Tower (formerly known as the Post Office Tower and, before that, the GPO Tower) is the tallest structure in the city at 152 metres. Construction started in July 1963 and was completed in September 1965. The tower became operational in December 1966. It has 26 storeys, housing technical areas and offices, and five levels of circular aerial galleries at the top. This telephoto assisted image towards the tower is from a distance of about five hundred metres.
