Allegories of Science and Art
'Allegories of Science and Art' within the spandrels above the arched entrance to the Great Western Arcade. The figures date from 1875 and are by architect William Ward. The male figure on the left personifies science, he holds callipers and compasses. Also below his outstretched arm is a governor from Boulton and Watt steam engine. He rests his right hand on a vase. The female figure personifies art, she is holding a painter's palette with an easel at her side.
