Outside Bushwackers
One consequence of the legislation prohibiting smoking inside pubs and clubs has been a proliferation of external seating. This line up on the south side of Edmund Street belongs to Bushwackers, described as a 'bar-restaurant-club', which occupies the lower ground floor and basement of Exchange Building.

National Telephone Exchange building
The ornate terracotta faced building erected by the National Telephone Company in Newhall Street. Newhall Street continues to house several of Birmingham's telephone exchanges and is a major centre in the UK communication networks.

This was built in 1896 as the National Telephone Company's offices and exchange and has been described as the finest commercial building of Birmingham's brick and terracotta period.

An exemplary piece of Victorian commercial architecture, boldly detailed in strikingly red brick and terracotta. The main facades are articulated by giant arches divided by piers which continue up as turrets, shaped gables and chimneystacks (Image]). By Martin & Chamberlain, 1896. Grade I listed. Built as offices and telephone exchange for the National Telephone Company, it is now offices.
