Detail of 55-56 St Paul's Square, Birmingham
A very showy entrance (actually on Charlotte Street) to one of the square's early C19th houses. Partly an early C20th rebuild.

Former industrial building, Birmingham
This is at the junction of St Paul's Square (left) and Charlotte Street (right). It is clearly a former industrial building but I do not know its former purpose. The rather plain facade is relieved by some decoration and the use of red bricks above blue bricks.

Assay Office, Newhall Street, Birmingham
By A.B. Phipson, 1877-78, in red brick and Darley stone for the dressings. The top storey was added by Ewen & J.A. Harper, 1914, by which time Phipson had added the three-bay extension beyond the C20th's two-storey miserable contribution. Grade II listed.
The assay office continues to test and hallmark precious metals. Its website states that it is the largest such office in the world.
