Age Concern Shop on site of former Midland Bank Northfield. Sorting code 40-11-20
I worked for Midland Bank HSBC for 32 years and spent all but the last two in Birmingham Branches. I am photographing all the branches, or what's left of them, as they were when I joined Midland Bank in 1963. The branches all start with the sorting code 40-11. This is the site, at 852 Bristol Road South, of the Midland Bank, Northfield.Bennetts Hill Branch on the corner of Bennetts Hill and Waterloo Street. The branch, as HSBC, is now at 770-772 Bristol Road South, itself the former site of Boots the Chemist. The Longbridge sub-office was manned daily from Northfield. Both branches had the sorting code of 40-11-20.

Northfield By-Pass, Sir Herbert Austin Way (A38) and Frankley Beeches Road
One end of the recently opened Northfield by-pass. This section of the A38 has been named "Sir Herbert Austin Way" after the founder of the Austin Motor Works. Sir Herbert ( or more properly Lord Austin) lies buried just a couple of miles from his factory in Lickey churchyard, Rose Hill. He must be spinning in his grave with what has happened to his factory. Most of it is now just a demolition site awaiting promised development. Part of the Black Horse pub can be seen on the left of the picture.
