Birmingham & Worcester Canal and railway line
Looking southwest from Somerset Road. Pritchatts Road crosses the railway line and canal at the bridges in the distance. The Worcester and Birmingham Canal was built to link the River Severn to Birmingham & the Black Country. The railway line originally formed the former Midland Railway's West Suburban Railway, opened in 3rd April 1876. The line was electrified in the 1970s to form the Cross City Line, and is heavily used. The passing train is a longer distance central trains service.

Railway and Canal near Edgbaston, Birmingham
The Worcester and Birmingham Canal runs alongside the railway which bring trains in to Birmingham from Redditch and Worcester. I'm not quite sure which route this Class 323 was on; the train to Lichfield followed just two minutes behind it!

Railway and canal near Edgbaston, Birmingham
The Worcester and Birmingham Canal was built in the mid 1790s here, and fully open to Worcester by 1815. The Midland Railway was opened here in 1876. The railway now brings in lines from Redditch and Worcester, running close to the canal all the way to the city centre.
Somerset Road Bridge (No 84) over the canal is about a hundred metres ahead. The top of this bridge would have been raised when the railway bridge was built needing a greater headroom.
From Wikipedia I extract: The Class 170 "Turbostar" is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) built by Bombardier Transportation (and previously ADtranz) at their Derby Litchurch Lane Works, England. Introduced after privatisation, they have operated as regional trains as well as long-distance trains, and to a lesser extent suburban trains. 122 units have been built.
Midland Mainline (MML) was the first operator to order Turbostars, with the first being introduced in MML's green and tangerine livery in 1998. It is unclear where the unit in this image is going - Cardiff (from Nottingham) via Bristol (or just Bristol) has been suggested, but the only timetables I have seen don't tally, but they often don't!!
