Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston, Birmingham 5
The name Cannon Hill refers exclusively to this park and its immediate area. It is believed to be named after a day during which Royalist troops camped here during the Civil War on their way to the Battle of Naseby in June 1645. The park, part of which is seen here from the Midland Art Centre (a.k.a. The MAC) was laid out in 1873 on Cannon Hill Fields, part of the Moseley estate of the heiress Louisa Ann Ryland. The land and the work were paid for by her and given to Birmingham Council on condition that the park should not be named after her.
