Inaltry
Warm winter sunshine glows on the south elevation of the farm house at Inaltry. In the distance, to the left, are the council houses at Milton, in the next square, and Clune Hill is on the skyline.

Inaltry Farm
Known in the 19th century as Inalterie, which is supposed to mean "place of the altar" this farm has the remains of a ruined castle next door, in the adjacent square.

Remains of ruined Castle, Inaltry
The information I have comes from my copy of The Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland published in the early 1850s. The ruin is described as "a very old and massive but anomalous structure, in one part of which is a deep circular hole enclosed by a wall rising to a considerable height. Close to it is a vault with a stair descending into it". This is all that remains over 150 years later!!

Clump of Trees
It's unusual to see a clump of mature trees in isolation like this, so I looked at the Victorian six-inch map, and I see that it is the remnant of a line of trees which presumably marked a farm boundary but has since disappeared. To the right, in the background, is Inaltry, with Milton beyond.
