Tannery Site
These unsightly heaps of rubble right beside the main road through Keith are the remains of a tannery. There were proposals to turn the buildings into an exhibition and heritage centre highlighting the history of tanning, but these came to nothing and the buildings were demolished. Beyond the piles is the tower of Holy Trinity Church, and to the right is that of St Rufus Church, with Keith Town Station in front.

Gordon Bennett
'Gordon Bennett!' is an exclamation of amazement referring to the scandalous behaviour of the American playboy, publisher and sports promoter James Gordon Bennett Jr. His father, also James Gordon Bennett, was born in Keith in 1795, emigrated to the United States of America and founded the New York Herald. James Gordon Bennett Jr was born in New York in 1841, and took over the newspaper in 1866. It became expedient for him to leave New York in 1877 following a spectacular misdemeanour, after which he managed the New York Herald from his yacht in Europe. This stone commemorates the parents of James Gordon Bennett Sr, James Bennett, who died in 1824, and Janet Reid, who died in 1854. (In Scotland it is customary to include a married woman's maiden surname on a gravestone, which is a great boon to family historians.)
