You can see where the late Alec Clifton-Taylor (The Pattern of English Building) is coming from when he writes of granite buildings: "...an unfortunate scarcity of shadows... ...'dead grey'..."

Site of Aberdeen Market
The 1960s indoor market was getting increasingly run down and the whole edifice was demolished in 2021-22, with optimistic plans to replace it with some unspecified 'retail and leisure'. In the meantime it has exposed the rear of the buildings facing onto the south side of Union Street. No. 101-105 to the left is C-listed (LB20525 https://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB20525 ) with six storeys visible but only four facing Union Street due to the change in elevation. Note the outsized oriel window on the fourth level.

This important street slopes down from Union Street to the harbour. It seems to have a permanent haze of diesel fumes and cigarette smoke...
