The Cottage (formerly Christ's College)
After the 1843 Disruption, the Free Church rapidly established its own theological training colleges. This extravagant (excessive?) gothic/Tudor building was erected in 1850 at the cost of £2025 by the Aberdeen Free Presbytery to serve the whole of northern Scotland and the Isles. The huge oriel window once commanded a fine view down Union Street but later buildings have encroached upon it. It is now a bar. William Robertson Smith plaque
Smith was a leading figure in the Free Church and a highly prolific Biblical scholar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Robertson_Smith . His views on the historical (in)accuracy of the Bible were too much for some conservatives and he was put on trial for "heresy" (http://www.william-robertson-smith.net/en/e060heresytrialEN.htm ) in 1878. He was found not guilty, but dismissed from his post of professor at the Free Church College in Aberdeen (which is now a raucous nightclub).
