Crossing the road by the Royal Bank of Scotland
Saturday shoppers at what is probably Aberdeen's busiest crossing for pedestrians at Union Street, Market Street (out of sight to the left) and St Nicholas Street pedestrian zone to the right. Behind them looms the B-listed Royal Bank of Scotland building (see: http://data.historic-scotland.gov.uk/pls/htmldb/f?p=2200:15:0::::BUILDING:20553 ) from 1929 with its massive Corinthian columns and classical doorway emphasising its solid permanence. Farther down Union Street are original granite buildings from the 1820s: http://data.historic-scotland.gov.uk/pls/htmldb/f?p=2200:15:0::::BUILDING:20554 .

Union Street, Aberdeen
Union Street (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Street,_Aberdeen ) is famously straight, but is clearly not level, as the telephoto lens emphasises. The usual congestion of buses is apparent.

St Nicholas pedestrian precinct, Aberdeen
Aberdeen has very limited pedestrianized area compared to most cities, although there is drawn-out discussion about making part of Union Street more pedestrian friendly. Note all the junk: information boards, traffic lights, bureaucratic road signs, planters, litter bins, phone kiosks, CCTV masts... that clutter public space. The huge Corinthian columns of the Royal Bank of Scotland can be seen in the background.

Looking down St Nicholas Lane, Aberdeen
The sun never seems to penetrate this gloomy alleyway off the pedestrianised St Nicholas Street, which is busy with people on a Saturday morning.
