A better picture will probably be obtained when there is no foliage. These are the drawholes for where the lime was removed after burning and are next to the course of the old road near Washington Quarry where the chalk was originally obtained. The kilns operated from c.1839 until they were closed during the 1930s though they were used for ammunition storage during the Second World War.
