This is one of Stourport-on-Severn's many "lost" pubs. It became a beer house in the 1830's, though the building is probably much older. It was popularly known as "The Boxers" but closed over 50 years ago in December 1956. At one time the pub brewed its own beer in the dark yellow building at the back. Stourport was fond of Crowns and Anchors, so this should not be confused with the wonderful Old Rose & Crown in Worcester Road (fortunately very much still open), or the Anchor (or Old Anchor) also in Worcester Road and now closed, or the Hope & Anchor in New Street (which when it opened was also for a short while called the Crown & Anchor) nor with The Crown in Bridge Street (which has now become Ye Olde Crown). The present colour of the exterior of 39 Mitton Street is rather strange. Despite being in a conservation area it has been painted this very dark blue. A photo taken in 2001 shows it in a pleasant cream colour with a band at the bottom in a dark yellow matching the former brewhouse at the back. It looked much nicer and more in keeping with surrounding properties.
