Inn names such as the Hollybush or Holly Bush and the Bush are some of the oldest used in this country being, according to The Inn Sign Society, a direct descendant of the ivy displayed by the Romans outside their 'Taverna' or wine shops. Some believe that this gives rise to the proverb 'Good wine needs no Bush.' The Holly Bush in Stourport-on-Severn doesn't, of course, date back to Roman times but this is one of the oldest parts of the town, pre-dating the canal, and the building was certainly used as a beer house from 1836, but the building is much older. http://www.innsignsociety.com/html/history.html
